Pound-for-pound king Vasiliy Lomachenko is bringing his talents back to the left coast.
Lomachenko (12-1, 9 KOs), fresh off a trio of victories at New York’s Madison Square Garden, will make his debut appearance headlining the Staples Center in Los Angeles when he defends his WBA and WBO lightweight titles against mandatory challenger Anthony Crolla (34-6-3, 13 KOs) on Friday, April 12.
The fight will air on ESPN+ (11 p.m. ET), coinciding with the one-year anniversary of the streaming network, and will also feature former super middleweight titleholder Gilberto “Zurdo” Ramirez in his 175-pound debut in the co-main event. Airing the card on Friday allows it to avoid competing with ESPN’s undercard coverage of UFC 236 the following night.
A two-time Olympic gold medalist from Ukraine, Lomachenko returns to southern California where he trains and lives for the first time since defending his 130-pound title against Miguel Marriaga in 2017 at the Microsoft Theater across from Staples Center. Lomachenko also won his first world title in nearby Carson in 2014 by outpointing Gary Russell Jr. at featherweight.

Vijender Singh vs Calvin Metcalf, 8 rounds, super middleweights on April 12: Los Angeles (ESPN+) .
View this post on Instagram
There, Singh (10-0, 7 KOs) will face Calvin Metcalf (9-1-1, 2 KOs) on the undercard of the Vasiliy Lomachenko-Anthony Crolla fight, streaming live on ESPN+.
Vijender Singh pounds on the heavy bag under the vigilant eyes and guidance of Freddie Roach at the legendary trainer’s Wild Card Boxing Club in Hollywood. This has been a snapshot of the daily scene at the Vine Street gym over the past two weeks.
The undefeated Indian super middleweight has been honing his skills in two-a-day morning and evening training sessions in preparation for his U.S. boxing debut April 12 at Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Originally, no opponent was named, although boxrec has as an opponent the American Calvin Metcalf, 24 years old and 9-1-1 record, 2 knockouts, who has remained undefeated in his last 4 fights.
This will not be the first fight for Singh, but it will be his first fight since December 2017, when he defeated Ernest Amuzu.
A 33-year-old Singh is a talented fighter, but there is concern that he is in the back of his career. There is no sense that Top Rank sees Singh as a key fighter to bring the best Indian fans to the professional ranks.
Anthony Crolla is set to fight in the United States for the first time in his career.
Vasyl Lomachenko, 31, will put his unified lightweight world title on the line against the Manchester fighter.
Lomachenko is a two-time Olympic gold medallist and widely recognised as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers.
The 31-year-old knocked out Linares last May to capture the WBA lightweight belt.
He previously held the WBA featherweight strap and added the WBO title to his collection in December when he defeated Jose Pedraza.
When is Crolla vs Lomachenko?
The fight will take place on April 12.
Where is Crolla vs Lomachenko?
The fighters will battle it out at the Staples Center in Los Angeles.
Crolla, 32, said of the announcement: “I believe that I can win a world title again, and these are the kind of fights that I’m in it for.
“This is the biggest fight that can be made out there for me. I’ve earned it, it’s not like I’ve been given this shot.
“Since losing my title to [Jorge] Linares, I’ve come back and had three solid wins.
“I’ve not won the lottery or not won a raffle to fight Vasyl Lomachenko, so I’m looking forward to it and I’m loving training as I get older.
Gilberto ‘Zurdo’ Ramirez vs. Tommy Karpency on April 12 in Los Angeles, CA
Mexico’s Gilberto Ramirez, already a world champion at super-middleweight, where “Zurdo” has made five retentions of the WBO belt, wants a world title at light-heavyweight.
The unbeaten 27 year old is eyeing a shot at Sergey Kovalev but first he will meet tough and experienced contender Tommy Karpency, on April 12 in Los Angeles on the Lomachenko vs Crolla card.
Karpency (29-6-1, 18 KO) has made two title bids in the past, falling well short against Nathan Cleverly for the WBO belt and Adonis Stevenson for the WBC belt. His greatest accomplishment is a split decision over a shot Chad Dawson, which doesn’t quite make up for losses to Karo Murat, Andrzej Fonfara, and Oleksandr Gvozdyk.
His last three bouts saw him beat Marlon Hayes (15-fight losing streak coming in), Rubin Williams (27-fight losing streak), and Mickey Scarborough (9-fight losing streak). That said, he does has a win over a 12-44-2 guy named, and I swear I am not making this up, Mike McFail.
Ramirez (39-0, 25 KO) has been criticized for soft matchmaking, but this might be the worst yet. Even if he’s moving up in weight, an unbeaten champion should not be fighting a guy whose only credentials are losing to a bunch of solid fighters.
